From the planes that land and take off at Kastrup Airport, passengers can be lucky to see anything on the ground that looks like a large metallic starfish. It's the old Danish Aquarium, now reborn as The Blue Planet, which opens to the public on Friday
Many have over the years visited the strange fish on the old Danish Aquarium in Charlottenlund. But the time is now past. All marine animals are moved from the old functional building the new plant at Kastrup, which with its 9,000 m2 is almost three times as large. A few large foundations have contributed a total of 630 million. DKK for the project has been realized.
The shape of the new building is inspired by a whirlpool. But when this kind of symbol architecture often can seem a little prolighting farfetched, it works really well in this case. A main reason is the ideal location near the sea, and that many people can actually get to see the building from the top because of its proximity to the airport.
When you walk into the aquarium, prolighting it also works as a compelling solution. Almost like another Jonah, who allow themselves to be swallowed up by a whale. The walk through the rooms where the walls consist prolighting of large or small glass panes with fish behind, seem alive, friendlier and less formal than the old plant in Charlottenlund. It is a clear improvement over the previous, although some of the aquariums seems a little small compared to the rather large fish swimming around in them. Following the exterior design
And the shape of the exterior is not just a gimmick, you can see the building's interior that follows the exterior design. This is not self-evident. This type of organic architecture often require complex structures that provide the spaces within prolighting the building in a somewhat different form. In Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, for example. little correlation between the outer and inner form. In the case of the new aquarium it is managed for architects and engineers together to solve the problem with a pretty prolighting simple steel structure.
The house is clad in aluminum sheets that can evoke fish scales. The diamond-shaped plates are fitted with overlap, as the classic wooden shingles. The solution is well done and fits well with both the form and content of killing marine animals home. Around the building are pools and terraces, which supports both the plant's main characters and provides space for picnic area and playground. The only part of the facade that does not quite seem to go the distance, is a small glass-covered part of the one wing which seems dull and boring compared to the otherwise delicate finish. But it is definitely a minor detail.
The building is the result of an architectural competition in 2008, with 3XN wins. The studio began in 1986 and was once known as post-modern, inspired by the American architect and theorist Robert Venturi. In the 1990s swung 3XN to a more mainstream minimalist wave. In recent years the firm has developed a more original and independent prolighting style with, among other Ørestad Gymnasium and now the Blue Planet. Their construction is distancing prolighting itself from the angular pragmatism that is the main trend in modern Danish architecture. prolighting
The inner form is used as an exciting stage for the abundant wildlife in the water and gives a good flow to the public through the building. There is no set route through the exhibits, you can start at the wing you want and then trickle prolighting forth. This plan would provide less congestion, but does mean that you may be unsure about where you actually are in the exhibition, and whether one has got it all.
Each of the 'wings' prolighting includes themes such as 'Amazon' including hundreds of piranhas, a 'Faroese bird cliff' with guillemots and puffins living prolighting in a 15 meter high rock face, supplemented by dogfish, halibut and below the water. There are also a coral reef and an African lake. The biggest water tank contains 4 million. liter of saline and called prolighting Ocean Aquarium. This becomes evident hammerheads, and in this aquarium is a glass tunnel, so you like the Zoo's new polar bear cave can be completely surrounded by the underwater wildlife. In The Blue Planet has 53 separate tanks with a total of 20,000 animals from 450 species. Good lighting
The lighting is well done, most with spot on wildlife, but the shining 'bølgeflimren' on the ceiling and walls also contributes well to the mood. The dissemination of the individual aquariums that tell the audience something about the specific fish you consider is somewhat traditionally done. However, there is a long shallow pool, where children and the young at heart can get to even touch any of the common fish in the Danish waters. Finally, there are various daily events, such as the feeding of sea lions.
